Even if I leave it in a long time? The other method you mentioned is for finishing pistols and other types of guns, no? There is a website for the products, I just don't remember.

Are the shields and their color judged?
Bill is right...you want to use the manganese phosphate, but if you're using fresh solution, better not leave them in very long if you want medium to dark gray. Parkerizing is the name of the process. Try this website for materials: http://www.calvan.com/

Judging the splash shields will be relatively easy...pickyness on the phosphate color and the attention paid to the shields will depend on the judge.

It was last available as GM #336110, but it's now discontinued. Maybe GM got mad because Paragon supplied the piece with their name on it. That's usually a "no-no" for GM parts.

we took the "splash shields" off because they held the exhaust heat and made the floor hotter in the summer. JMHO

I have no idea if Paragon or GM removed the logo.
If I ever get home from work, I'll have to see if I can take a picture for you.

here is a link to the solution I bought from a reseller on ebay..

I did my sheild just recently - PERFECT!
I did a very fast sand blast with fine sand, just to expose bare metal and provide just a tad of roughness.
In the boiling solution for just 3-5 minutes.

            The stuff works very nicely!

The sheilds are judged - I did mine with gray phosphate, and was told they were to light in color- was told to use mangenese and it would pass judging.

              Oh, that's easy...Paragon removed them.

When Paragon received that volume of purchase documents and specifications from the General that expressly forbade the manufacturers trademark being shown on the product, they quick organized a small office task force with utility knives cutting out the emboss.

The purchasing guy at GM that cracked open the first sample is the one that was angry.

                Bill,

I've used the manganese from this vendor for several years with excellent results. In fact, I need to buy a new batch.
