    62 casting number

I cannot make out a number on the engine pad on front of block. The casting on the left rear is #378270 & right rear is #L81. Does the L81 mean 12-8-61? My car was built in April 1962. I believe it to be 327 with Carb#3191S. Should I take a little paint remover to the engine pad?

I'd take all the paint remover it takes really clean up the pad. Remember, NO chisels, screwdrivers, files...

Am I looking in the right place on the right-rear of the engine? It is hard to see there with the vent tube in the way. What looks to be L81 is just to the right of the vent tube. What is this number? Farther down to the right is covered by the bracket to the plug wiring.

John - Ooppssss, my mistake, block casting number is on LEFT rear and should end in '870. Casting date on RIGHT rear you indicate is L81 = December 8th, 1961

              John,

Yes Dennis is correct, complete engine casting# at left rear s/b 3782870. Maybe your earlier reply is a typo("left rear is #378270 &").

If you have a April 62 vin#(109117 to 110519), you may expect your engine to be cast somewhat closer to then, but technically you have a 6 month spread before car assembly.

Once you clean the paint off the pad, you should see the vin derivative at the bottom, then the assembly date & HP suffix code. You say carb is 3191S, so it should be "RC", like mine, 250hp, manual.

              My 62 project is a early car(#483), engine 3782870 cast(H251) Aug 25 '61, assy Aug 28 '61. Pics below for ref.

What is your car vin#? Pictures of your engine pad would help too.

                Re: 62 casting number

I'm not the greatest typist. The number is #3782870 on the left & L81 on right. You get old and your fingers don't move in the right direction all the time. At least I Know it's a right motor. I'll try to get paint off the pad and see if I can find a number. Last numbers on my vin are110975. Thank you all for your help.

Dennis, I took some spray-on paint remover to the pad and guess what? No number onthe pad. Now what can I do?

are there horizonatal broach marks(they run rear to front) or radial broach marks(circular) or absolutly no broach marks? if 1) above, could be over the counter case, in which case you are in good shape. if 2) above, it may be the original block(case) but bubba removed the vin derivative and machine assembly data. If 3) above, could also be original block bubba decked then polished the pad.couild also be a pass car 870 case/block that had its machine assembly data + possibly the vin derivative, removed . in no case should the pad be blank like you describe. good luck, mike
