In preparation for restoring my '70 Coupe, I'd like to bone-up on tips and techniques for restoring the chassis. I'm planning on doing most of the work myself and would like to have good reference material on hand. I already have the standard issue GM shop manuals and NCRS JG. Any other suggestions?

Re: Chassis Restoration Reference manuals/books?
Dan,
I have the Corvette Chassis Restoration Guide 1953-1972 by Joe Tripoli. It is available for $20 at the NCRS Store. It is about the only book with detailed pictures of bolt heads and paint markings for a C3 that I know of. It would have been great if it were in color rather than black and white, but I understand the added cost of doing that. It is good for the money. There was also a newer How to Rebuild Corvette Rolling Chassis 1963-1982, also available at the NCRS Store for $32. I have looked at it in book stores, and it does have color pictures, however I think the book is geared more towards getting it on the road rather than being NCRS correct. I elected not to buy it, but others may have different opinions.

Re: Chassis Restoration Reference manuals/books?
Dan, I agree that Tripoli's book is a good reference...it will help you with some information that is normally not available from the chassis itself. For example it will show a drive shaft part number for your car, and how it was stenciled. It will also give you some clues about frame stamps, body shim marking, and other little details you probably will find on the chassis itself.
But, if you've done restoration before, you will already have some clues for finding this information. Always remember...the car will, in most cases, be the best reference.
Your main need is going to be the respective finishes on each chassis part. Back in day of the old Bloomington Gold and Corvette U., I attended a two hour seminar on chassis finishes presented by Ron Goduti and Kevin McKay...it has been invaluable to me during my time in the hobby. Unfortunately, even if BG still exists in some form, I doubt Corvette U. is still around. If you can't figure it out, come here and search the archives...if it isn't there, there are some of us that will be particularly helpful for 70 restoration.- Top
