    Door Panel Trim Removal

I just removed the passenger side door panel from my 66. Both are shot and will be replaced. I want to remove the trim (race track and arm rest) and reuse it on the new door panels.

Any good suggestions on how to straighten the nails without breaking them? Attached is a picture of what I have. Interestingly there is a May date on the door panel but I always thought my car was a March build. The nails look to have some rust on them. My intention was to remove the staples and simply pry the nails straight with a screwdriver. Before I do that I wanted to check and see if there is a technique I can use that would minimize the chance of breaking the nails.

If I do break a nail or two, is there a fix anyone can suggest?

    Thanks

You have the right procedure. Most likely at least one will break off. I don't know any easy fix.

I believe these items are being reproduced. The "nails" typically break off fairly easily.

Steve - I know the trim is being reproduced but I'd like to keep my original if at all possible. It's cosmetically good and the new pieces are very expensive. I'm not sure if there is a salvage procedure if the nails break off. Are you aware of any?

I have these same pieces removed from my '66 and was wondering what the correct finish should be. In other words, should they be polished to a bright-shinny finish or be left as a more dull finish. And as for the paint fill, would a simi-gloss black be correct?

I fabricate the tabs with sheet metal. Cut them out with a square box on the end just large enough to catch under the lip of the trim piece. Bend the edges of the square down to form an angle. Place the edges inside the trim and hammer the hat down jamming the edges under the trim. Makes a nice replacement.
