    '58 Vacuum Advance tube

Does anyone know if the tubing connecting the distributor vacuum advance module to the carburetor on a '58 - 230HP is rubber or steel? Thanks, Susan

My kneejerk says there will be rubber in there somewhere to allow distributor timing flexibility. On the other hand, I would think the AIM would answer your question in a heartbeat. Best, Dennis

Susan, The FI car and your 230 HP both use a similiar idea for the vacuum advance line. The front of your vacuum advance is hex shaped and has a threaded area which I believe is for a 3/16' curved steel line. Buy a piece of 3/16 brake line for this project. Your line with be a combo of steel and rubber. If your car has an automatic then there is a plastic T fitting in the rubber hose running to the carb (or FI if it's 250 or 29 ).
The judging manual describes this on page 58 of the 4th edition. Maybe the aims though will spell it out as Dennis said.
But to repeat you would have to at least have a short piece of steel line and fitting coming off the hex VA on your '890 distributor. John D.

John, thanks for the reply and great details, much appreciated. You and Dennis both mentioned the AIMS,, not sure what this is, can you elaborate, maybe just a term I am not thinking clearly about. Thanks, Susan

Dennis, thanks for the insight. Makes sense there would have to be some rubber line for flexibility to adjust the distributor. I asked John about AIMS, not sure what this refers to,, can you elaborate. Thanks, Susan

Susan, Look in the back pages of "The Driveline" for the Aims which is the Corvette Assembly Instruction Manual. Member price is $19.00. Just state that you have a 58. There is a separater manual for each year I believe. It's one of your most valuable resources. I assume you have the current Technical Info Manual also known as Judging Guide for 58 to 60. 4th edition.
I would have thought the guys would have jumped in with the answer already as I haven't been on line all day.
            Good luck, John D.

              Susan,
Yes you need a 58 AIM to help you, but here's a view from my 59 Assembly Instruction Manual until you get your own 58 AIM. Looks like a similar setup as John talks about. You must have a base engine, 230hp?
You may need the special carb mount stud(for left rear of carb). It's hollow so it protrudes into the intake manifold to supply vaccum to the dist.

One caveat about the AIMs though. It won't always give you detailed info about the engine "assembly", as they were assembled in a different plant. The AIM was to assist vehicle assy and may not have all the engine details you need.

Hmmmmm, apologies......not trying to hijack the thread, but was there ever a engine "AIM"?

Yes, there was, but it was never published outside of GM; my wife did many of the Engine A.I.M. illustrations in the 70's-early 80's.

Interesting John, thanks for sharing. Figured there had to be internal documentation at a minimum. It'd certainly be nice to have those available for us all. Too bad she didn't have a few copies lying around.
