    C1 Jacking & jack stands

What is the best way to jack up a 62 and set on jack stands. I have a floor jack for the initial lifting. I don't want to twist anything, but I need to do a little work undr the car.

Place the jack under the A-frame, use two jack if you have them. Do NOT place the jack under the steering arm.

Place the jack under the side frame ( Where the X-member attaches to the side frame) lift and place the jack stand. Same from the other side. For the rear, you can lift by placing the jack under the differential, IF the jack is strong enough, if not lift from the axles and place the jack stands next to the springs.

Caution - remember to "shake" test the car before crawling underneath to make sure it's nice and solid. Had a '61/2 at a National one hot summer that almost fell because the jack stands weren't securely placed. Gary....

          1. Jack up the rear on the "pumpkin." Place jackstands at the ends of the axle. Don't forget to to put wheel chocks on both sides of the front wheels. When the rear wheels leave the ground, there's nothing holding the car in place.

          2. Jack up the front under the front crossmember. However, be careful of the steering arm in the middle. Best way is to put pieces of wood on both sides of the steering arm, and connect them with a third piece of wood. I made a "saddle" for this purpose. Jack on that. It's tempting to jack on the steering arm jobbie that hangs down right there. But I'm told this could crack. If the crack then failed, you'd lose all steering. Put the jackstands on the crossmember. I put them in the cavities made be the A-arms.

          3. Use lots of jackstands. After the 4 referenced above, I put extras under the frame. Shake the car afterwards. I'm scared under there.

One thing to note; best open your doors when the car is going to be raised all at once. Stress on the doors is not a good thing.
