    Bob -

The tension on the prongs in the base of the well (that grab the element and pass the current that heats it) determines how hot the element gets at the point of release; the lanced prongs in the side of the housing that bear on the side of the element determine how it "pops" when the prongs in the base release it (from not popping at all to popping into your lap). You can "tune" these two areas with a small screwdriver to establish how you want it to work (either unplug the lighter or disconnect the battery while you're making "tuning" adjustments or you can get a great spark when the screwdriver slips and touches hot and ground at the same time).

      Hi Bob,
I just adjusted mine, and it was pretty simple. Just like John said, a pair of prongs at the very bottom of the socket to hold the element when you press in the lighter, and the two tongs cut in the housing sides to determine how far the entire element assembly pops out when it attains the correct temp.
I did the bottom prongs first, then the sides. Just bend a bit at a time, you don't want to snap off one of the tabs.

      Cheers,
      Paul
