    '62 radiator petcock confusion

When one looks at the AIM, it says the original radiator petcock is brass and attached to the aluminum radiator with a long aluminum nut. The vendors, all sell aluminum petcocks as correct. Which is correct? Is the aluminum petcock better for the system, if the brass petcock is correct? My car came to me 21 yrs. ago, with the aluminum radiator and nut, but with a brass petcock. Of course that doesn't mean it hadn't already been changed.

A aluminum drain cock was used with all 60-62 aluminum radiators. The brass cock was used (56-60) with a extension hose. If my old engineering memory is correct, brass mated with aluminum will corrode over time.

Dennis, I certainly agree with you on the mismatched metals. I was wondering what was NCRS correct, the AIM or good metallurgy. Sometimes the AIM is so good to have, I have no idea on how a person can "do" a car without it. Then, I find problems with common sense, that seems to cloud what was really done. You are right, regardless of judging correctness, the petcock should be alum.

        Dave--
You have me confused--you mention the AIM calls out a brass petcock, which would really surprise me, since they don't make reference to materials. Then you indicate that because of the metallurgy, you'll go with aluminum, even though that would apparently cost you in judging.

On page 79 of the 5th edition of the 61-62TIM&JG, 4th paragraph, says "mid-to-late 1961 radiators and later were painted gloss black, and contained aluminum petcock and aluminum drain extension through bottom of radiator support."

It seems to me, unless I missed something, that the manual has already addressed your concern, and that there is no deduction for aluminum petcock--in fact, the deduction would be for brass. So I agree--go with aluminum--because it's right, and because we've had it that way in the judging manual for over 25 years.

        Regards,
        Mike

Mike, you have me there. The JG and AIM are with the car which is 20 miles away. As I assy. and check my parts list a refer to these as guides. I then go home and order parts or look in my "treasure chest" for the right parts.I could have sworn I read that in the AIM, but I didn't look at the JG to check against it. Now I have to find if I imagined it or where I think I read it.

The 1953-1962 Chevrolet Corvette Service Guide Page 6S-2 states that "An aluminum drain cock is used with aluminum radiators"

Now I found where I read it. It is in the JG. It is a little hard for me to understand the way it is written, until I read it several times. It talks of the 60 model having the brass petcock on the aluminum hardware. I know I read it somewhere, just read it wrong.
