[VIDEO] Mecum Auction Results: 1963 Corvette Z06 Tanker

I don't get HD Theater so I had a friend TIVO the Mecum auction that was on last Saturday night. I got the DVD from him this morning and just uploaded to my Corvette Blog the video of the 1963 Corvette Z06 Coupe Tanker which sold for $222,500.

The 1963 Split Window Z06 Coupe is one of the most coveted and therefore collected midyear Corvettes. Only 199 of these special performance optioned Vettes were produced. Then factor in the N03 36 gallon “tanker” option of which only 63 were made and you’ve got a very special Corvette indeed. This spectacular Sebring Silver split window […]

There were a couple of more interesting Corvettes from the night including a couple of C1s with RPO 687 that I might post as well.

Rumor has it Dana Mecum(or associates...)bought 30-something cars out of Las Vegas and took them to Indy....right out from under Barrett-Jackson's nose.....and they're rather proud of it.

That's true. The person representing the owner of the thirty-one cars was interviewed during the auction. His name is Jim Guck from Webster,NY.

Is it typical that many of the cars sold in auctions like this are owned by the company running the auction (as compared to selling for others on a commission basis).

The scenario that they did own many of them from last week would actually make sense in relation to stuff that I overheard two of the Meacum employees discussing last Friday regarding "their cost" of specific vehicles.

YES....you'll notice that if a big dollar Corvette/Camaro/Slowpar/Whatever comes up, the bidders are either in the front row (their seats are reserved, of course) or on the entering side, looking at the cars before they go on the block. It's NOT a coincidence. And it's NOT a coincidence to see the same cars at different auctions....if "the owners" can't dump it in, say, Kissimmee, they'll bring it to Indy...with Mecum, you'll see quite a bit of that, as they hold several auctions a year. I know of one car they've dragged to at least 3 of their own auctions and STILL can't get what they put into it, out of it. B-J is a no reserve auction 3 times a year now, so you'll rarely see a car owned by B-J ever auctioned off again with them as the owners.
