I have always used water, Comet and a scrub brush since the 60's and have been pleased with the results.

      Wayne,
If you go over the whole top with an art gum eraser to remove any heavy dirt, then use comet and a scrub brush I think you will see a big difference
      in how clean it looks

make sure to wet down the painted surfaces well and keep them wet when using comet to prevent marking the paint

          Clem,
Thanks for posting that tidbit as I failed to do that in my original post.

Thanks to all. Will go out and get the comet and eraser.
I hope this wasn't a dumb question. Never used comet before.

                Wayne,
A little additional info. I usually let the Comet "sit" a few additional minutes if it is a bright and sunny day to let the bleach effect work. I can't say with any certainity that it helped but I felt better by doing so. Once again, as Clem pointed out, keep the paint wet and rinsed.

Tell you what not to use. Whitewall cleaner. Cleans the top but leaves streaks in the paint that would have to be color sanded out
