    judging spare tire/wheel

checked the archives on spare tire/wheel back to '76. someone said that spare wheels were NOT balanced at assembly and therefor were not expected to see weights on spares for flight judging. is this true? or just urban legend? doing some finishing touches on my 63 swc after a 2 1/2 year restoration and trying to get thing right. thnx, pappy

    Re: judging spare tire/wheel

Looks like no one wants to address this, so, here goes until the other guys can jump in.
Most of the untouched cars I have seen have had weighted spares, although, in some cases perhaps it is possible that weights would not be required.
Since the five wheels moved through production as a set it would seem logical that all five were subject to the same weight process.
It doesn't make sense that the General would have a worker take the time to look through the group of wheels for the one that was not weighted to place into the tub...just grab and go.
Currently, judging does not require weights on the spare. Although, non-weighted wheels may raise suspicion. If weights are applied they are expected to be the Micro type in ounces, current metric weights would require a deduction.

Checked a BFG 660 silvertown from a 1966. This is a spare that has never been mounted to a car or dismounted from the rim. It has a weight on the backside with two pink dots on the side wall with the weight in the middle

All five wheels for each car went through the same mount/balance sequence and all were balanced to the same specifications.

As a footnote...for late C3 model years equipped with aluminum wheels...weights were installed on backside.

Isn't it possible that when a tire was checked for balance, it was ok and didn't require weights? I recall in my many "tire purchasing years" this happened once or twice.

Sorry, haven't heard the term Bird Wing"
I don't have my Driveline in front of me, but, someone is advertising Micro's for sale.
Yes, as I mentioned in my earlier post, it is possible that a wheel/tire may not require weights.

The Mirco weights are also available on the famous auction site.
