DFW area Engine Machine Shop or Builder

    Hi everyone,

Great new look on the technical discussion board. I am looking to rebuild the LS-5 in my 71. Most everyone I have talked with wants to deck the block which is something I am trying to avoid to protect the pad. I was wondering if anyone knows of any shops they have used or could recommend in the Metroplex. I am in N. Plano.

    Thanks for the input.

    Joe

Joe, best engine builder is Chuck Anderson (817) 763-8115. Chuck & his brother Dave are long time NCRS & Texas Chapter members and do great work. They've built many a NCRS Top Flight motors. Also, invite you to join the Texas Chapter wwwncrstexas.org Regards, Gary....

any shop that uses a deck mounted boring bar has to deck the block to make sure the bore are true and perpendicular with the crankshaft center line.

When I purchased my '70 LS-5 four years ago here in Arlington, Texas it didn't have the original engine but I got extremely lucky and found a true 1970 Corvette LS-5 long block from a totalled '70 in a little town south of San Antonio. When I had the engine rebuilt and balanced by a machine shop in Burleson, Texas I specifically asked that it not be decked. Many will argue with this logic but I wanted the block to be a tribute to the Corvette that "died" to make mine right. It still has the engine build date and suffix code (which matches my original transmission) and VIN of the "deceased" Corvette. Better yet the engine and heads were built/cast a month before the build date of my Corvette.
I recommend you contact Carr Campbell in Plano at http://carrscorvettesandcustoms.com/
