    57 Bell Housing

Are there supposed to be lock washers on the bolts that attach the bell housing to the engine block?

    Thanks in advance!

Michael, I believe no seperate lock washers on the housing bolts - rather many were "special" bolts with a forged enlarged portion of the head that appears to be a washer - and I guess it is, but it part of the bolt, not an additional part. Did I write this...??? Sorry. DC

      Dennis and Mike----

Yes, the bolts described are called flanged head bolts. They were used for all 1960-82 Corvette applications which had aluminum bellhousings. However, for the earlier Corvettes with cast iron bellhousings I THINK that just standard head hex bolts were used with no washer, either split lock or flat. I'm not sure about this, though; my C1 knowledge is very limited.

GM had a "habit" of being stingy with the use of flanged head bolts. They often used them for applications in which an aluminum part was being retained (probably to spread the retaining torque over a larger area) but rarely used them for applications in which a steel or cast iron part was being retained. The manifold bolts for big blocks with cast iron manifolds was a notable exception. I LOVE flanged head bolts; I wish they had used them EVERYWHERE.
