I know this has been discussed before, but does anyone have any recent experience in trying to get Rt. 66 CDs? My wife ordered the complete set for me for Christmas and they're still on back order.

I got a set last year. It took about two months. I've forgotten the company name. They were copies off the nick at nite channel. Quality is soso. Some quite good and some that keeps freezing and are barely watchable. But since I missed most of them when they were on origionaly I still enjoy them.- Top

Re: Route 66 CD's
Richard,
More recently discussed on this board were the newly-released DVDs of Route 66; season 1, volumes 1 and 2--totalling 30 episodes are already out and season 2 volume 1 is due out in May, date TBA. They're priced at $24.95 (US) through Best Buy stores in the US (not the ones here in Canada), and I recently found them at Fry's (a mostly west-coast US chain electronics store), in Las Vegas for only $19.99. I think you can get them through Best Buy online and perhaps Amazon.com as well.
Much of the previous discussion focused on complaints regarding the quality of the digital conversion of these shows and, depending on the episode, some were better than others. But they were likely all better than anything simply taken off the television, because the current releasing company has access to the actual films. As to the quality complaints, the company acknowledged in an interview on a website that they too had received feedback from people dissatisfied with the quality and blamed the problem on poor quality films that they had used. They have subsequently gained access to all film masters for the series and I note that the second volume of season one seems more consistent than some of the episodes on volume one. The company is considering re-mastering the episodes that were done from poor quality films and may susbsequently re-issue these (at customer cost, of course--it's business).
They are also planning release of one or more "budget" DVDs containing only a few select episodes.

Re: Route 66 CD's
I got my Route 66 DVDs Season 1 Vol 1 from Best Buy and purchased Season 1 Vol 2 on Amazon.com both were under $30. There is a complete Season 1 set being released by the same company next month as well as Season 2 Vol 1. I did not notice any video quality issues with either of my DVDs...maybe I got one of the later releases. I do know there were bootlegs of the episodes Nick at Night ran in the 1980s that were available on the internet and their quality is poor in many episodes. Remember these were VHS recordings from someones TV and converted to DVD. The new releases are direct from the original film.- Top
