57 FI fuel shut off selonoid

I bought one of these from Jack Podel. No instructions, no one answers the phone. It is designed to open the fuel line for fuel flow when the key is turned on. It has two black wires, one for the coil one for ground. I don't know which is which. Does it make any difference???
I don't want to ruin it by connecting the wires incorrectly.

Walt, I've not used one from Jack, but the one's I've used didn't care which wire was connected to the battery. I'd connect to the battery side of the ignition ballast resistor as the + side of the coil gets a voltage drop after the ballast resistor warms up. I also put a inline fuse in. JMTCW, Gary....

That is one very nice thing when you order one from John DeGegory. Even if you have installed a half dozen of them, his units are WAY complete and include enough instructive guidance to gag a maggot. I love it. And, yes, either wire can go to whatever - no harm on that issue. Dipstick

Another fun thing is to add a "secret" underdash shut off for the solenoid to slow down the occasional would-be thief. They won't get very far on the amount of fuel available. Of course, on a thief's rollback, or if they steal your trailer, you're screwed in most any case...

i sure hope your rochester isn't a 4360 with dual spiders. i just installed a shut off solenoid on my 4360 and i know i've got better than 12 hours on the plumbing job. there is a scarcity of room on a dual spider set-up and adding the solenoid is tedious and a good case of rectalgia. i can send ya photos of the finished product if you are dealing with a dual spider rochester. if its a single spider, its not too difficult(even the dipstick handled it. but i'd like to see a picture of the dipsticks solenoid as well as the Nitrous plumbing job. not that i'd ever stoop to cheating as did the Low-life of Lyle)Mikie

it would be easier to put the shut off in the main fuel line and after shutting the fuel run the engine till it is out of fuel. it would take a little cranking to fill up the bowl on restart but if you only run your corvette once in a while whats a little cranking time compared to a hydro locked engine. installing a electric fuel pump would even work better. shut off the pump and run the engine till it dies and the electric pump would refill the bowl when you turn it back on. JMHO

Thanks for all of the replys. My car is a fulie and installation wasn't too bad. I had to reroute the fuel line to the distribution device and had just enough room to place the selenoid. It's not visable once the unit is back on the car. I'm going to hook up the wires today uising the advice I have received on the board.

Clem, Sorry but I don't lilke that idea. Although it reminds me of my old Model A Ford days. Rather crude approach don't u think? I mean it's embarrassing cranking and cranking and washing the oil off the cylinders etc etc when a simple shut off solenoid under the unit will permit the FI to start right up. Not just any solenoid though. Must be one that will take the extreme heat or it will be toast in short order. JD

Walt, What would you like to know. Did you get two copper lines with the solenoid? Or do you have to make your own? What model 57 do you have? Basically a kit should contain two prebent lines for the specific model (none for dual spider though as we leave those up to Dr. Mikey), fittings, nice correct hi-ohm resistance coil, two wires and instructions. Simple. One wire goes to the 12 volt side of the ballast resistor. Make sure it's 12 volt. You only want the solenoid hot when the ignition key is on. Be careful routing the wire. DO NOT put it between the plenum legs like I used to do as you will fry the wire, etc. Run the wire from the solenoid around the backside of the air meter and snake it around the coil bracket keeping it away from the accel linkage. Cheater is to hook it into the choke cover wiring but that's a bubba way.
Connect the other black wire to a 1/4" bolt that is holding the fuel meter bracket to the bottom of the plenum. I always advise that you crimp and then solder the terminal ends. Solder is the key word. Use some heat shrink to for the terminal. Don't permit the hot solenoid to touch the copper spider lines.
Use the thick one piece base gasket-which is original.Don't cheat and use the 4 individual base gaskets. The 1/8" gasket is an insulator, is original, and the solenoid likes it. most of these owners push them in and out of the trailer so what is the problem ???

John, Thanks for the info. the selenoid i bought came with 2 black wires attached. thats it. no instructions at all. My car is a 57 Chev 283/250. i cut the 1/8 line and placed the switch between the cuts and ran the wires out the back between the legs of the plenum. Hooked one to the bat side of the firewall resistor and grounded the other to the intake. Started the car and it ran fine. I assume everything is working OK.
