    '96 Wheel Wrench Wing Nuts

I was missing one of the wing nuts and retainer clamps that holds the wheel wrench down behind the driver's seat. I ordered the wing nut from a local Chevy dealer but it is different than the one that was still in place on the other side. I am not the original owner of the car so I don't know if the wing nut that was in place is an original.

The one that was in place is what I normally expect - i.e. it is rolled steel, painted black. The replacement I received from the Chevy dealer for part # 10165652 is injection molded plastic with a threaded brass cylinder. I'm trying to determine which wing nut is the correct original. I would appreciate a response from an owner of a '96 with the original wheel wrench wing nuts.

    Thanx,

GM #10165652 is the correct current REPLACEMENT wing nut. It is a plastic nut with brass thread insert, as you described. Although not a "direct successor" to the original wing nuts, it was "pressed into service" for your application after the original nuts were discontinued. The 10165652 has actually been used for quite some time as the spare tire hold-down nut for many GM cars, but not C4 Corvettes. It has also been used as the air cleaner nut for some GM cars. But, it was never originally used for the wheel wrench handle hold down for any C4 Corvette.

The original nuts were as you described for the other one you have on the car. They were stamped steel. I'll post more information on these later.
