    B-J Lot 646 435HP 69 Coupe for $150.000

Just sold on the block, a '69 silver-black 427/435 coupe for the tidy sum of $150.000. Finally getting some respect for the C3s.

What's strange/depressing is it is hard to get one third of that for the same 68.

I love it! The early Shark Corvettes are making a strong showing. I'm waiting for Lot 670.1, '70 ZR-1 and a couple of '69 Corvette convertibles coming up.

        Hey Rich,
How about 350.1, a pain ol' 1968 350 HP convertible that went for 152 big smackers. OH, I forgot, it was painted resale red. And the bidder was probably under the influence.

Just sold for $102.000. You'd think the rarity of 25 units produced would command a higher price.

Good advice, Clem. I could use a few of them!

These prices will surely make sellers happy, but I don't think it's such a great thing that yet another generation (and my favorite) is fast becoming unobtainable for most people.

...and after watching the Mecum debaucle last night on HD Theatre, where it SEEMED like hardly ANY of the cars sold, I'm not all that optimistic about the "value". There's a lot of stupid people paying stupid money for stupid cars at these auctions. It seems to me that the CARS aren't bringing the $$ they did a year or two ago; but the PARTS sure are...it's getting to be where buying the car isn't the big deal; it's keeping it alive without repro'ing the crap out of it that runs one into bankruptcy. I know I just socked over half a grand into the rear driveline of my '70 without blinking and that's NOT including the trailing arms or the rear diff. All NOS stuff, though. But then again, one shouldn't be in this hobby without some form of a deep wallet...or he/she won't be in it for long. And THAT sucks.

B-J is kind of a joke I think.

Was watching the Mecum auction Sunday and similar cars were MUCH less that B-J. My guess this is a more accurate valuation.

It's nice to see the cars, but the B-J auction is just a show biz ego thing to me.

alot of sellers lost alot of money at barrett jackson. you have to be out of your mind to put a nice car on a no reserve auction durring a recession. nothing is bringing top dollar right now. i was at the corvette expo all weekend and not many were sold because they did not reach the reserve. same with the mecum auction on tv saturday night. they probably sold 12 cars on a 3 hour show. i wonder how many people had to buy their own car back at barrett jackson and pay the fees to keep from giving a nice car away.

Comparing Mecum's "With Reserve" auction with Barrett Jackson's "Without Reserve" auction is like comparing apples and oranges. The tendency is for more people to show up for a no reserve auction. They know that if they bid something off it is theirs. At an auction "with reserve" you know that your time may be wasted by bidding. It is a crap shoot either way, but "without reserve" has a tendency to bring more money.

I am not critizing or defending either BJ or Mecum. They both do a good job in their arena's

They're not auctions, they're media events now....and believe me, those cars are NOT what they appear to be on TV or the auction block. The idiots that do the commentaries on TV or the auctioneers aren't gonna tell you that the half-a million-dollar '57 fuelie on the block has a passenger car generator, etc-it's not their job. I got a chance to work at one of the big auctions this January for one of the big auction companies....and after personally moving/parking/relocating/help jumpstart/rebuild carburetors/put in new sparkplugs/tape exposed short in sparkplug wire/etc. over 600+ cars just to get them over the auction block, some reputed to even be possible "Benchmark" or "Survivor" cars......one realizes how bad a person can get ripped off at these things. It's all business, and you BETTER KNOW EVERY SQUARE INCH of a car before you even THINK of getting a bidders paddle.

One nice thing though.....it IS a nice thing to see some of the "Big Boy" dealers get ripped off as well....I saw a BIG Corvette dealer make a BIG screw up and unknowingly pay a LOT of money for a car that was not what it appeared to be....and now that they found out they screwed up, they're lying about it, trying to dump the car on eBay..... I LOVE IT!! I can't wait to see the extra parts that I know went with the car show up at their stand at Bloomington Gold.

Here are a couple of the early C3 auction videos I captured from Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach this weekend. Unfortunately I didn't get the 1968 Red Convertible that sold for $152,000.

                            Sold for $150,000
In what could very well be the all time high price, this 38,000 mile 1969 Corvette Coupe equipped with the potent L71 427 ci 435 hp engine sold for $150,000 at the Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach auction in March 2008. Our search for a previous high led us to Keith Martin’s VetteMarket.com Corvette database where an […]

                            Sold for $102,000
We came into this auction delayed by one of SPEED’s copius commercial breaks so we didn’t get the usual analysis one would expect for a Corvette of this rarity. The 1970 ZR-1 Corvette package was the small block replacement for 1969’s L-88. Two other specially equipped big blocks were planned and then scrapped, leaving the […]
