How were Order Numbers generated/decided for new car build sheets?

Were purchase order forms preprinted with a number and distributed to the dealers by GM? The dealer would then fill in the blanks for the various options and send the form back to GM as an official order for a car?

Steve -- you've got it right. The dealer order forms for a given model year of Corvette were pre-numbered by Chevrolet and sent to the dealer. Number appears on the top right hand corner. I could post a pic of '66 or 67 forms that were reproduced in Vette Vues in June of 1996.

Al Grenning gives an excellent presentation on this process, and if I may quote:

" ...this number is the only designation to follow a Corvette all the way through the build from originating dealer to wholesale invoice. Every document generated in the build process reproduced this original order number, EXCEPT the window sticker" (end quote)
