Re: Caliper dates
No one has ever established, for certain, if the number series appearing on calipers is a date code. However, all indications are that it is a date code. For 1965-72 calipers, the coding is likely a julian system BUT NO year is coded into the series---just the consecutive day of the year, represented by THREE DIGITS, of whatever year they were manufactured. This sort of dating, if, indeed, it actually is a date code was used for the "546" series calipers (65-E67) and the "545" series (L67-72).
The "547" series (1973-82) definitely used date coding and used several different date coding systems. However, I believe that all of these included a reference to year. Some of these are seen just like the 65-72 calipers EXCEPT there are FOUR DIGITS, the last one representing the year. Some use a more traditional system in the format XX.XX.XX or, for example, "11.15.75" for November 15, 1975.
As far as I know, caliper "dates" are not a judged item in NCRS judging. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
