    64 Metallic Brake Shoes

My '64 tanker was delivered with J65, Metallic Brake Option. They are no longer on the car.

I am trying to find answers to the following: (J65)

    1. finned drums or not.
    2. if not, are they the same as the regular drums
    3. What is the difference between the J65 and the J56 shoes?

I have the following in a box that I got somewhere:
shoes with metallic pads 3 pads on 2 of them, 6 pads on 2 of them- Part # on all shoes #5460375 - Approx 2 27/32" wide. What are these.

Can these be relined. I am assuming these are the fronts. Is this stuff available?

Marty, I answered your questions accurately and completely over at the other place a few hours ago.

I saw that , Mike, and I appreciated it. I thought the larger audience here might turn up some shoes.

J-65 front drums have a slightly thicker web than base drums and have a finer finish on the friction surface. To casual observation they look identical to base drums. Rear J-65 drums are the same as base except for the finer finish. Only the HD system drums have fins.

If you measure the front drum web thickness and post the drum casting numbers, that will help.

I believe the J-65 shoe is the same as base with the segmented metallic lining the only difference, but I don't have any data on specific shoe numbers. The OE replacement part number is for a complete assembly of shoes for one axle. HD brakes used a unique shoe.

Posting photos of the shoe may help to ID them.

Occasionally NOS replacement J-65 shoes can be found, but are usually very high priced. Since the metallic friction material is very long lasting OE shoes can often be resued as part of a complete system cleaning and hydraulic component overhaul to restore the brake system to as new performance. Drums are okay to use if the ID is no more than 11.090".

There are better lining materials out there, and they can't be seen during judging.

A good place to start is www.carbotecheng.com

Marty -- In my basement are NOS sets of J65 fronts (191's) and rears (194's). I might be able to respond to any descriptive questions you might have.

Also have complete trailing arms off a low-mile '64, so I could compare the base shoe with the metallics. Let me know if I can help.
