Re: First Oil Change after rebuild

I notice that the front label has the API "starburst" but not the service category symbol (the "donut") with the service category contained within. I would assume that the "donut" is on the back, and this is the "official" API seal of approval that the contents are certified API. The donut should be on both S and C category oils. The "starburst" can only be used with S-category oils. You should not see the starburst on C-category oils - just the "donut", usually on the back label.

I have never seen the service category displayed in this manner - just printed on the label without the donut. Every bottle of oil I have seen has the donut with the API service categories listing within, usually on the back label - just as shown in the API 1509 document.

"Synthetic" is just a marketing term. All motor oils are a blend of base stocks from 5 API defined Groups, and anything above Group I is considered "synthetic". As you go up in group number the viscosity index increases which is why the "synthetic" CJ-4s have an SAE viscosity range of 5W-40.

Unless you normally do cold starts below 10 degrees F or want to extend oil change intervals beyond 5-7K miles, it has no benefit.

Regardless of low annual mileage or type of oil, the oil should be changed at least annually.

Have you looked at any of the educational material that I provided links to in previous posts on this thread?

Clem, reference the Synthetic Oil Myth you posted. I bought my 96 LT4 new and drove it the first 24 hours from the dealers lot to home, about 1,200 miles. It has just turned 40K. The engine did not use any oil and still doesn't. I drive it mostly highway trips. I am very happy with its no oil consumption for the past 12 years. Only change the oil and filter once a year due to time not mileage. Have continued to use Mobil 1 5W30. What is your experience with your newer Corvettes?

Thanks Duke, I have learned alot from your posts.. Greatly apreciated..

I will pick up the regular oil and do the oil change today..

Since the car sat with the old oil all winter I will be adding the EOS that I picked up at a GM dealer nearby AC#992869. Is there anything else that i should do?

How long should the engine run for the old oil to run freely?

I have used EOS (500ml) as an oil supplement in my Corvettes for many years. No problems. In fact today I changed oil in my "new" 1974 convertible (just arrived from USA a week ago) with four liters of Castrol GTX 10W-30 plus 1/2 liter of EOS to fill a NAPA Gold/Wix, Delco-equivalent PF-35 filter, crankcase, etc. I have no problems with this combo. Done it for a long time.
