    1954 steering column

Any suggestions on how to remove a steering column from a '54? The hole in the firewall is not near as large as the one in a '56 and I don't see how it will clear the inner fender and pass thru the dash and firewall. Engine is out. All other parts are removed--just the column and gear box. Thanks.

Only way I could do it was to lift the body off the chassis, then slip the steering column out through the firewall.

Best way is as Kent mentioned. I took mine out when the body was off frame. You can put it back in with body on, but be ready to scratch up inner fender wells. They do flex to a certain degree. Radiator needs to be out as well.

Although not stated, you should understand to remove the column from the bottom, not over the top.

Very true. I learned that the hard way when I restored my 54 (now sold).

Had to lift the body back up off the frame to get the column in.

I've had some tell me that you can "crunch" the inner fiberglass fender and get it out, BUT, I don't think that's a good idea.

          Live and learn.

Thanks for all the help. I have been studying the job for about a week now and will attempt the task.
