66 fuel pump inlet configuration ?

Installing new fuel pump and having issues with the inlet configuration. The fuel pump that was on the car was not original (no AC logo) and had the inlet on the same side as the outlet - closest to the front of the car. The new 40038 has the inlet on the other side of the pump. I can't see how to set it up without kinking the fuel line hose. I don't have my AIM with me.

Can someone tell me the correct configuration, or better yet post a picture.

Your post could use some additional information ... perhaps you made a typo & you've purchased & are attempting to fit 40083 (not "40038") fuel pump?

If so, perhaps you are tying to fit it to a '66 w/300HP engine? If so, you have the wrong fuel pump. 40083 has inlet/outlet 180 degrees apart, while 4657 (most common on 300HP engines) has inlet/outlet port ~90 degrees apart.

If you are not concerned with the original look or numbering convention, current 40018 AC Delco is often used in place of 4657 & has the fittings in the correct orientation.

      Jeff,

Thanks for the reply. You're correct, it was a typo and the number is 40083. This was the AC part number that I was told was correct for the car and see as being called for in Paragon's catalog as well. However, now that I'm home and have looked at the AIM, I can see that the inlet should be about 90 degrees apart. The AIM calls out part number 5594657.

So, what's the correct fuel pump for a 1966, 327/300? Is it the 4657?

      Anyone?

Re: 66 fuel pump inlet configuration ?

Rob - My June '66 car has the 4657. According to the TIMJG, a 6440433 pump was used on the 300hp engine until changed to the 4657 on March 28, 1966. The 40083 pump was used on the 350hp engine. Tim

Thanks Tim. My car was built in late April and off the line on May 5th, so the 4657 should be it.

Note the last 4 characters of your AIM p/n -- xxx4657. These old pumps are seen now & then on eBay and at swaps. They can be rebuilt & other manufacturers such as Airtex may still have 4657. If you are not concerned about appearance, marking & judging, a new Delco 40018 works fine. Also, an AC 4656, 4665 & some others can be configured as a 4657 by re-clocking the bottom cover to align the two ports correctly.
