C3-1971- Fuel Pump Replacement?

All,

I searched the archives on this subject and I've thought about my options. I think I'm going to do the following but still need input to make sure I'm not forgetting anything:

I have an original 71 with a 350 and it is a very nice driver that is close to being judged. It has the original fuel pump. I want to get my carburetor rebuilt next month. I've contact Lars about the process. In the mean time, I plan to replace my fuel pump so I have the original working and I can get a replacement cheap (besides the original is 37 yrs old). From my research, it is not recommended that I get my original rebuilt.

I saw that a good replacement is the Carter #6106. Are there any others that have done this recently that can offer a better replacement?

My thought is I can reinstall the original when the day comes for judging. Any other advice?

Hi Greg:
One note of caution: My experience it that these old fuel pumps don't always store well. Diaphragms and valves dry out and either stick or crack.

I agree with Joe. You can still get the original replacement for it, I have one, as a metter of fact. I would put on the replacement, and take the point hit. Safety is safety, afterall.

I am not sure why you couldn't get your old one rebuilt, unless there isn't anyone doing that.

I haven't looked into it further than this discussion board. I saw a few posting stating it's not a good idea to have it rebuilt because the originals are "crimped".

Where is the best place to get an original replacement that you're mentioning?

If you buy a replacement will it have the AC cast into the side? I have seen many new pumps with a stamped part number only.

I believe Airtex is the major mechanical fuel pump manufacturer today. They are boxed under many private labels such as AC, Carter, etc. All that I have seen are stamped with the AC part numbers

Lyle is talking about the AC logo cast into the body that judges expect to find.

Personally, I would leave it alone. Drive it, have it judged and suck all the good you can out of that old pump before it dies, then replace it. Like Joe says, once you take it off you're taking a chance that it will dry out and be a nice historical doorstop thereafter.

My concern would be having it fail part way somewhere, and leave you stranded with raw fuel under the car. I just HATE to hear that four letter word, starting with "F" that results in melted plactic.

The new one I have at home is still in the AC Delco box, I'll see if its stamped.
