    65 - 66 Brake Calipers

What numbers should I see on an original set of 65 - 66 Brake Calipers, casting numbers and date code format?

    Re: 65 - 66 Brake Calipers

Calipers casting numbers should begin with #546 for 1965, 1966 and early 1967. The fronts are 5465952 outer half and 5465954 inner half on the front and 5465905 outer half and 5465902 inner half on rear. The 1965 judging guide 5th editon is correct. The 1966 judging guide 4th edition is Not correct. The 1967 judging guide 4th edition provides no casting # for the calipers.

David -- as to the dates (a controversial subject, as many will say they are not dated, and I'll admit it's hard to interpret the 4-digit codes on some later ['67-up] calipers) here's what's on the original calipers on my very late 1965. The 8 halves range from 96 (April 6th) to 155 (June 4th). This on a car with other cast/dated iron components ranging from April 5th to July 2nd.

The dates are always between the 2 screw heads. On the rears, the dates are located to one end, near the bleeders. The pic is of the "954" left front inboard.

OK, and how did you interpret those dates? I must be missing something. Mine has the bake light insulator and is on 66 # 125855, but I also have an old set that is off of 65 # 11888.

If they represent dates, and they may very well represent dates, they are a julian date system. The number represents the consecutive day of the year. So, "125" would represent the 125th day of the year. On the 65-E67 and L67-72 calipers, there is no reference to year. That's the thing that makes the date fairly meaningless. In other words, half the calipers ever made of the proper casting number would be "correct" for any car using that casting number.

For the 1973-82 calipers (i.e. "547" prefix casting numbers), there is usually a reference to year in the date coding. Several different dating systems were used on these calipers, but all that I've seen do include a reference to year.

As far as I know, though, the "dates" on the calipers are not a judged item. I'm not even sure if the casting numbers are judged.

            Joe -
Thanks for the info, I assumed a Julian date but could not isolate a year. It looks like I have a mix of calipers, two wheels are correct with the 546 series, then one is 5452281 and 2284, the other is 547 xxxx with a date code of 6315 on both. Would those be the later series with dates of 315th day of 1966?

The "545" prefix casting number calipers were used from L1967 through 1972. The "547" were used from 1973 through 1982. As I mentioned previously, different date coding systems were used on these 73-82 calipers. However, I would expect the code to denote the 315th day of 1976 or 315th day of 1986 (SERVICE). It could not be the 315th day of 1966 since the "547" series were not being produced then.
