    C-3 P/S Pump Number

Just got my P/S pump apart this morning and retrieved the number from the housing: 5698119 and date coded: DA 92. Wondering if this housing is correct for a 74 L-48? I believe the Julian date would be decoded as: April 02, 1974. I'm not sure what the "DA" would signify. The pump looks original, has the belt guard and has about 34 years of residue internally. Thanks for any help.

If by "housing" you're referring to a casting number on the case of the pump, itself, I'd say it's very possible that casting number was used for 1974 pumps. I have no record of it, though. That number is definitely NOT the part number for the 1974 pump with reservoir assembly, the 1974 pump-only assembly, or the 1974 reservoir.

If the "DA" is a CASTING symbol on the cast case of the pump, I don't know what it refers to. However, the "D" portion of it MAY refer to the GM Danville, IL foundry which is a likely source of the castings for this pump case. The "92" may be a pattern number.

      Joe-
That 5698119 # is cast on the side of the housing / case of the pump assembly. It was very pronounced after getting the resivoir can was pryed off of the housing. The part # was stamped into the cast metal and the date code / plant location was cast on the metal. Thanks for your help.

Here is a drawing of the 1974 Saginaw PS Pump. There are two reservoirs shown on the drawing. It references two part numbers for the reservoirs but I don't have a reference as to which is which. Is the reservoir a one piece "ham can?" Or does it have the smaller upper half that is furnace brazed to the round body? The part number that I have for the 1974 Corvette pump is 7816847.

Note that there is a date coding note on the drawing. It is the day that the pump was tested. The code was stamped on the reservoir. There is a slight difference in location depending upon the type of reservoir.

I will correct the drawing to reflect just the correct reservoir when I get some feedback. Note this is the last pump with the keyway and nut to retain the pulley. 1975 had the interference fit design.

I will be on vacation the next week and 1/2 and will not have access to these files for a while.

Some of the folks with Corvettes equipped with PS will have to verify, but I think the one-piece "ham" reservoir is for small blocks and the brazed neck is for big blocks. Please verify this if your Corvette has power steering and you believe it has the original pump on it.
I believe this drawing would go nicely in the TIM&JG. Jim, thanks for posting this drawing.

            Jim-

Thanks for the input. Would you happen to know what the # is for the actual cast housing is? That's really what I'm after. By the way, my pump pulley is retained with a key and nut, Not a interferance fit. The reservoir looks like the drawing.

The only pump part number that I can find that was ever used for a 1974 Corvette is exactly the number you mentioned, GM #7816847. That pump has the round reservoir with the "welded tube" filler neck (i.e. the 63-74 style reservoir). It also has the shaft for tapered fit pulley with locknut. I know this for absolute certain since I have an NOS, in-the-box, GM #7816847 pump assembly.

                Re: C-3 P/S Pump Number

I will update this drawing when I get back to Saginaw. The drawing comes from a P-pump chart. So it has all the options that could be in production in 1974 for GM passenger cars and trucks. I am also sure that 7816847 was used on big blocks as well as small blocks. I am quite sure that there was always only one pump released for the Corvette from 1968 through 1982.
