I know the "book" says they are to be black. But, I was having some serious problems with fisheyeing. In stripping the column, we found that the column was originally painted fawn to match the interior color. I personally never saw a '62 with a painted column that matches the interoir. Maybe the early number, 399 is a carryover from earlier years.

Re: '62 Steering column color
I have it that the steering column mast is painted a slightly dull gloss black. Interior gloss color is painted from the steering wheel end to 1 1/2 inches below the column bracket. the notch (elongated hole) on the side of the column marks were the interior paint should end....- Top

Re: '62 Steering column color
Dave--
No reason to change the manual, because fawn all the way to the steering box is not correct. I can't say that yours wasn't painted that way, but the over 700 original cars I have documented over the past 30 years have not had interior color past the bracket that affixes it to the bottom of the column. If you're absolutely convinced that yours came that way, then restore it that way, and take the hit in judging. Otherwise if you want the points, you'll need to do it black. The judging manual process has to go with what was standard, otherwise there is no standard. I know an original-owner low-hp car that has a 2268 generator--it hasn't been changed--but we can't change the manual to indicate that either generator is available on any horsepower car. That's just not the way it was.- Top

Re: '62 Steering column color
My previous '62, was a late no.(13787) and was white on red. It's column was black all the way. But, there is NO doubt, this early fawn '62 had a fawn column under the old Bubba black paint(many coats!). Was this possibly a variation on the fawn cars? Was it a possiblity on the early cars, that were painted this way? But, two have said their April '62 cars and fawn on the column. Hmmmmmmmmm Dennis, what color is your interior?- Top

Re: '62 Steering column color
I have a 62 that I purchased from the orginal owner 2 years ago. Their was no paint on the steering column past the fire wall into the motor compartment. In removing the VIN tag, no paint. The paint from the firewall into the car was painted black, with Red on the last 5 inches to match interior. The car was never hit, never repainted, still had all the orginal parts. Was it possible that this was an unusual situation?
