Automatic trans crossmember bolts for C2 & C3

Which way should the heads face on the through bolts that holds the cross member to the frame for 69?

Should the head be towards the front of the car or the rear of the car?

I also assume that the washers should be under the nut and not the bolt head right?

I forget which direction it is but I know for sure they only fit one direction. They hit the floor of the car if wrong. The only way you can do this wrong is when the body is off the frame. Is your's? If no one else responds I'll go out an look tomorrow. The car is in my neighbor's garage across the street and its snowing tonight in the Detroit North burbs.

Don't have a 69 Greg but I do have an orignal owner 1970. Just checked the bolts and washers on the transmission crossmember. The bolt head is on the rear side of the crossmember and of course the nut on the front. However you mentioned only washers for one location. My 70 has a washer under the bolt head and a washer behind the nut. Checked both left and right sides and they are the same. I did remove the crossmember about 20 years ago to clean and repaint it. I am sure I reinstalled the bolt, nut, and washers just like I found them since the crossmember was only out of the car for a few days while I had a new front seal put in my turbo 400.

Thanks guys, that helps. The body is off of the frame and the pics that I have before the chassis was taken apart also show the heads to the rear but I wasn't sure if this was correct or not...it obviously is though.

Jim, do your bolts have a flanged head or regular head? I'm pretty sure that I was the first one to take the transmission out 19 years ago and I've alway been picky about reassembling things the way they came apart so I don't think I would have lost these two washers....but you never know.

Can anyone else comment on if there should be washers under the head as well or just under the nut?

Greg I just looked at my 70 and it has flanged bolt heads.

Thanks for checking Jim. I find it odd that they would use a washer under a flanged head bolt because from what I understand, the flange is to take the place of the washer. Sounds like yours has been there from day one though.

I went and reinstalled mine without the washer under the head but I'd still be interested to see if others have washers under their head or just under the nut.
