GM part # help; 66 vs 67 glove box lock case

Can anyone tell me why there is a different part number for the '66 vs. '67 glove box lock case? I'm taking about the outer case, not the lock cylinder. The '66 part number for the empty case is 3838449, while the '67 GM # is 3899337. I know the lock cylinders are different (GRV 15 keyway vs. B keyway), but I don't see why the outer case should be any different.

    Thanks,

    Gary

As you note, the 63-66 glove box lock assemblies were different than 1967 due to the keyway of the lock cylinder. I have to assume that IF there was a difference in the case it was somehow related to the difference in the cylinder.

Where did you get the 3838449 and 3899337 part numbers? I show these numbers to be lock ASSEMBLIES. This should include the cylinder + case. If so, it may be that the only difference between them is the cylinder or it may be that as I surmised above, the difference in the case was related to the difference in the cylinder.

    Another interesting pair of points:

    (1) The GM #3838449 LOCK ASSEMBLY was replaced for SERVICE in July, 1963 by the GM #3840690 LOCK CASE (it is possible that the GM #3838449 was used in PRODUCTION after this time, though). The GM #3840690 LOCK CASE was discontinued and replaced for SERVICE in December, 1974 by the GM #8869811 LOCK CASE. I show the 8868911 as being applicable to 68-82 Corvettes, too. It was discontinued without supercession in November, 1998.

    (2) The GM #3899337 LOCK CYLINDER ASSEMBLY was discontinued from SERVICE in October, 1969 and replaced by the GM #1380873 LOCK CASE. The GM #1380873 LOCK CASE was SERVICE applicable to all 1963-67 Corvettes.

Gary -- I find the whole subject of cases / cylinders very hard to follow in the P&A's from year to year, and Joe L. has helped shed some light on the parts history. I guess they started offering this outer case in 1969 to service '63-67 because of the confusion. This item is found in Gr. 10.266 (not 10.242). I've taken the flash pic to show internals.

        Joe,

The GM part number I found in a 1967 Briggs & Stratton catalog. It describes the parts as "Lk. Case & Bolt", which is the same terminology as seen on the photos Wayne posted. But I'm guessing you are correct, and the description in the catalog are incorrect and they should include the lock cylinder, in which the different part numbers make sense. Thanks for the history.

          Joe; I'm confused; a follow-up

          Joe,

You said: "The GM #3899337 LOCK CYLINDER ASSEMBLY was discontinued from SERVICE in October, 1969 and replaced by the GM #1380873 LOCK CASE. The GM #1380873 LOCK CASE was SERVICE applicable to all 1963-67 Corvettes."

This really confuses me. If 3899337 is a lock cylinder, how can that be replaced with a lock case, 1380873, which is as Wayne shows just the outer case, not the lock cylinder.

Well, this is something that GM does from time-to-time. For whatever reason, they decided to discontinue the lock assembly. They replaced it with just the case assembly. In this situation, one can transfer their lock cylinder to the new case (and, by doing so, keep the key coding the same) or they can also purchase a new lock cylinder, have it coded for their car, and install it in the new 1380873 case. This way, folks have several options. My guess would be that they had complaints from folks that didn't want to have to carry a third key.

The other thing that they could have done was to just discontinue the 3899337 period. But, they didn't: they just replaced it for SERVICE with the case only.
