Mid year radio station button replacement?

Does anyone know the trick to remove the radio station buttons from a '67 radio? I'm replacing them and they seem to be on quite good. I definitely don't want to break something trying to get them off so I would love any suggestions!

I replaced mine this winter. If I remember correctly I believe the originals may have had a small screw on the tab (If I'm wrong hopefully someone will correct me). If there is no screw they pry off. As you said, you don't want to break something. I found if you so back and forth from end to end of each tab you can work it off. I used (and I can still hear my Dad telling me "a screwdriver is NOT a pry bar") a small screwdriver to work it off.

Also don't forget that you pull the tab out to reset the channels, so don't think you broke it if it pops out a quarter inch or so when you're trying to get it off. I got the replacements from LIC and they seemed to work and look almost original. Good luck! Shooter

Thanks Shooter. I tried to pry them off (yes, with a screwdriver) and I did remember that they pulled out to set to a station. I just wasn't having any luck but I'll try it some more & be patient.

FYI, the replacement buttons have set screws but the original buttons don't. So I wasn't sure if the factory glued them on & I have to break the glue adhesion.

Factory original push buttons were held in place via interference fit. The button is pot metal (soft) and the push rod is stamped steel with tips serrated.

The first time the push button is installed, the serrations 'bite' into the intentionally undersized slots in the buttons and lock into place. It was intended that if a push button was removed for service, it would be discarded and a fresh/new button used to replace it.

But, factory originals simply aren't available these days and the C-Central reproductions use set screws that CAN be seen/detected by savvy judges using a flash light. So, to re-use your factory original push buttons, squirt a daub of 'glue' into the keyway, install and let the glue set up before exercising the push buttons.

One form of rather soft/pliable 'glue' that's known to work is RTV (room temperature vulcanizing agent commonly known as silicone bathtub caulk)....
