PLEASE HELP ME ! I HAVE A 1964 ROADSTER . CAR IS A DOCUMENTED 30,000 MILE CAR. WHILE DISASSEMBLING CAR AND REMOVING FUEL TANK I NOTICED ON THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE VERY SIDE BLACK STENCILED LETTERS. THE LETTERS APPEAR AS "CHEV ST.LOUIS" UNDER THESE LETTERS APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN A LINE OF NUMBERS UPON WHICH I CAN ONLY MAKE OUT 3 OF THEM. CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT THESE NUMBERS REFERENCE TO? i.e MODEL/ PART NUMBER/ ?????????? THEY DO NOT SEEM TO BE VIN # RELATED. THANK YOU KEVIN WILLEMS

I believe it was the part number of the tank----GM #3819506. See if that doesn't "fit" with the numbers you can still make out.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: gas tank letters
When you reapply the numbers and letters you will have to cut the current stencil to make it as original. When I did my 64 coupe the kit did not match up. I think that the numbers and letters did not line up as sold. When cut you can line up as original. Gary- Top

Re: gas tank letters
Here's a pic thats been posted here before. You can see the number lines are center justified. The stencil that is availible from the repo places has the number lines left justified. As previously suggested by Gary, just cut the stencil and tape it back together correctly.
good luck,

Re: gas tank letters
What's wrong with the way it is? After 44 years, it can still be identified as a stencil applied by a human being more or less in a hurry - just like real life. If perfection is the goal, buy a new tank and stencil it; put the real tank on display alongside the car so it can be admired as real history.- Top
