67 Spare Tire Carrier - Bolts for Redlines

Hey, I own a 67 vert with a 327/300hp AC, PS & PB. Right now I have some beautiful redlines on the car that look great with my non-original (I assume) bolt ons. My spare tire carrier will not fit a redline spare. So here are the questions:

    1. Am I reading all the diagrams correctly by assuming that I would need to purchase two "long" bolts for the rear frame and one new long bolt for the front to "convert" the tire carrier to hold my redline spare?

    2. When you use the longer bolt set does it create a permanent gap so that the carrier door will not completely shut? In other words, will road stuff get into the tire carrier?

    3. Since the carrier and bolts appear original to the car, from a judging standard should I just leave it the way it is and put a correct size spare in it?

    4. Will the fact that carrier suggests no redlines and my car has redlines on it cost me some points?

    Thanks.

    1, yes
    2. yes
    3. probably a good idea
    4. most likely a small deduct ,if any, because different non matching spares were sometimes substituted by the factory. I had many original black wall and white stripe spares when the car specifically came with red line tires.

Some of the 7.75-15 reproduction tires will not fit in the mid year spare tire enclosure regardless of which bolts you use; their diameter is a bit greater than the originals. If the tires you have will fit into the upper enclosure, the bolts you describe will solve your problems. However, if you haven't already checked, first make sure the tires will fit into the enclosure.

I have an older tire that came with the car and fit into the carrier. It just wasn't a redline, like the ones I have on my car. I picked up a used redline to "match" and found out, before I knew much about the car, that it didn't fit. I think I will just use the older spare that came with the car.

Wheels and tires were set up, mounted, balanced and installed in car sets of five; I've seen many cars where a given type of tire was substituted as a car set (and so noted on the "Corvette Order Copy" with an RN number authorizing the substitution), but I've never seen only a spare substituted.

Yup, I agree. Most of that wheel/tire swapping occured at new car dealers to "make a sale" on a car that was in stock. If someone wanted "that one" but it didn't have the tires they wanted, the dealer would switch with another car in stock. Often, the spares in the two cars involved were not switched.
