On most original mid-year heater boxes, the side thats in the engine compartment had a black sealer around the exterior of the box where it meets the firewall. Does anyone know what this black stuff was called and can it be reproduced today?

I am not sure what it was orignally but 3M strip caulk works well and looks the same to me. Thats what I used my car. Its readily available at auto parts stores. Someone else may know of something other than this but I think it was probably the same stuff. -

Michael, I just went out to the shop. The 3M part number is 08578 for the black. It also comes in gray and white. White is a dirty white. Hope that helps!Comment

The '67s I restored also originally had undercoating sprayed over the black strip caulk.
