From a judges perspective, how does this look?

It still needs a few things but I thought I'd post some pics to see if I am missing anything that I'm not aware of.

My list of things that are still needed is:

Red plug in end of dipstick.
Plastic rivets in top of ignition shielding.
    Brace missing for alternator bracket?
    Molded PCV hose.
    Correct size alt belt.

Here are the pics...please let me know if you notice anything else.

    http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...P1010147-1.jpg

What color should the spring clamps be for the PCV hose?
    Is the alternator clocked properly?

If anyone wants to see larger pics just let me know and I'll e-mail you some.

    Thanks.

.....I'll figure out how to post pics soon...I hope

          Greg,
I enjoyed your engine photos. I went into the basement to check my 350/270, and yes the phrase 'Mouse Motor' came to mind. Can I borrow a few horses when you're not using them?
          Regards,

            Nice job Greg.

Lose the cardboard doughnut on the PCV valve -- that is a C2 thing.

If it were me I would like the AIR pulley -- the one on the pump -- a little darker, but maybe it is the flash that makes it look battleship gray.

Is that Teflon tape I see on the water pump nipple? Again it could be the lighting.

Re: From a judges perspective, how does this look?

Thanks guys and thanks Patrick for helping me post the pics. I replied with a "thank you" to you last night but I don't see it in this post so I'm not sure where it went....still getting used to this forum. Just wanted you to know that I appreciate your help.

I didn't know about the PCV tag so I'll loose that.

The smog pump pulley is from Bill Hodel as is the rest of the A.I.R system so the brightness may be just from the flash. It is "dry" though so if I lightly oiled it that would darken it a bit.

The "teflon tape" is from the flash because I didn't use any tape. I did however use a bit of that dark brown Permatex sealant but you can't see any of it on any of the fittings.

Alan I normally have no problem lending things to fellow corvette guys but since this is the "baby" of the 427 family I need all the horses I can get!

I just noticed in the TIM&JG that the valve cover gaskets should not have any paint on them but I don't know about that. I have several pics of early cars and valve covers that clearly show that the engine was painted with the valve covers installed and that there should be some orange paint on them. Can anyone comment on this?

                    Greg,

From a Non-Judge's perspective - Beautiful work! I compared it with my unrestored '69 429/390 and it seems to match up very well. I do have a question though. The alternator pulley on mine is black on the surface adjacent to the alternator fan blade. (I rebuilt the original alternator many years ago and don't remember if I may have refinished that pulley - perhaps incorrectly.) My JG and other references are packed away temporarily. Can you comment on the alternator pulley finish on your engine? I don't remember mine ever being a shiny metallic finish like that (it may have originally, since I have owned mine since 1974 - so it had 5 years to oxidize before I bought it). So, it's one part of my engine that I can't attest to the original finish for sure.

Other than that potential item, the rest matches mine from what I can see. I admire your detail and energy.

Looks great! Only a couple of things. Should the rear lifting eye be natural? Is there a coating on the exaust manifolds and should there be orange overspray on them? The bypass hose has to much orange paint. I believe there should be a couple inches of overspray on the water pump end fading into the black hose.

Re: From a judges perspective, how does this look?

You know I'm not a 100% sure on that alt pulley but I followed the TIM&JG as best as I could on that. Basically it says that machined steel pulleys are zinc plated so I assumed that that includes the entire pulley. It also says that if the fan is a separate piece that it is black. Now there may be an error in the manual and if that is the case I may have the pulley finish all wrong.

The rear lifting eye was natural only on L89 and L88s. I originaly thought that the exhaust manifolds should have overspray and in fact that was how I first painted it. After I posted thoses pics of it here and got some feedback(and re-read the TIM&JG) I realized that the exhaust manifolds were installed after paint. As for the coating on the exhaust manifolds...it's 10W30. They were de-rusted, lightly blasted and then wiped with 10W-30 and that's it.

Now I have heard varying opintions on the by-pass hose paint and it's about 50-50 for leaving it the way it is and redoing it the way you say to do it. I actually have a pic of an original hose that is painted like you say but I've also had some very respected people say that it is correct the way I have it. I decided to leave it like it is because I probably sprayed a bit too much paint down on top of the timing cover so it might look funny to have good coverage on the timing cover and little to none on the upper portion of the by-pass hose.

Thanks for the compliments but I owe a lot of it to guys like yourself for helping me out with all my questions.

Does anyone know if the valve cover gaskets should have orange paint on them?
