65 Small Block Side Pipe Interference

After putting my engine back in the chassis the right hand sidepipe touches the chassis ever so gently. Left hand has 1/8" clearence going down siderail. The chassis was checked by a reputable frame person. I have adjusted the engine whatever small amount I could but still the same. I have ran engine and it doesn`t seem to bother anything or rattle but has anyone else ran into this or have any ideas. My body at present is not on chassis. 327/350 2 1/2" original NOS pipes. Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Mike,

I added my side pipes after purchasing the car so everything was new. On my car the drivers side runs clear all the way. On the passenger side no matter how I adjusted it to be clear all the way after running it the pipe near the rear mounting (outlet) is very close if not touching the frame. I had no vibrations or rattles from it so have just left it alone. You didn't say at what point yours touches the frame. The only adjusting points I'm aware of are at the manifold and the frame at the outlet. I've tried loosening both these ends and moving the pipe around for best fit and then tightening things up but after running it through a heat cycle it ends up back to were I started. I guess I wouldn't be too concerned unless it is against the frame the whole length of the pipe. You"ll know more after you get it on the road.

Thanks Wayne, Mine is closest in the first 18" when it starts to go down the frame. I loosened the motor mount bolts and pulled with a come-a-long on the right side and tightened the bolts back up in hopes of gaining a small amount. I also loosened the trans mount and tried moving it a small amount. They all wil move a little bit but really did nothning for my clearence problem. It doesn`t rattle so other then cutting the pipe from the engine and adding a 1/2" and welding back together I think I am going to leave as is. Thanks!

        Mike,

Just a thought. Do you have a heat riser or its replacement spacer installed if your not using a heat riser? That would make a difference in that area if you didn't include one or the other.

Thanks Wayne, I have a NOS original type heat riser that I Had been saving for this car. I even checked it against an original to make sure than it was the same height. It probably is no matter but I thought I would ask as the body is off and I trying to take care of any bugs before it goes back on. Thanks!
