    C-1 Door Hinge Bushings

Hi, I have a quick question and think I already know the answer, but thought I'd ask anyways. Question is in regards to replacing worn out door pins and bushings (on my 1955). Do judges check for replacement hinge parts (mainly pins and bushings) and deduct any points accordingly? I presume not, but thought I'd ask first. However, if there are point deductions, what can one do to fix saging doors without point deducts? Any NOS stuff out there? I read some old archived material and thought I saw that the door hinges were also found on passenger cars???...hhhmm I plan on replacing my pins and bushings this weekend and want to get my game plan together. Thanks

The 1953-55 Corvette door hinges, GM #4154365, were unique-to-1953-55-Corvette pieces. As far as I can tell, no component parts (i.e. pins, bushings) were ever available in SERVICE from GM for these hinges. The 4154365 hinges were discontinued from SERVICE without supercession in January, 1961.

They don't mention that in the JM so I don't think it would be looked at. If it's noticeable when done using a repair kit I would not like that. Me I would take them to a machine shop to have the holes enlarged then have new pins machined to fit. (Cant cost much) I cant see judges measuring the pins thickness to determine if there original.
Remember you have to enlarge the holes anyway to fit the brass sleeve.

Thanks Joe and Roy for the info.

I agree that the work should not be noticable, but not having taken the hinges apart yet, I am not sure just what to expect in terms of oversizing the pins and bushings (and how obvious it might look).

Coincidently, I just saw ebay number 160217796046 which is represented as NOS bushings. I hesitate to buy them because I am concerned that the bushing diameters may need to be oversized as well if they are completely worn through. I guess they could be epoxy set if there were only thousandths of clearance wobble.

I might just spend the $25 in case they work.

Thanks Again, I'll post pictures of the progress for others to see down the road.

GM did service the bushings (and pins) for some later model year Corvettes. However, they never serviced them for 1953-55. I wonder if the bushings that are being sold are really the later bushings which someone "assumes" are right for earlier Corvettes? It is possible that the later bushings could be used. However, since GM never cataloged them for the 53-55 applications, I'm suspicious of claims that they'll work.

By the way, the 56+ bushings are still available from GM under GM #9721917 for about a buck, each, GM list. These may well be what someone is selling for $25. Also, these bushings can usually be found in the Motormite-Help! section of your local auto parts store.

              Joe:

Well...we will see. Since the auction had a Buy-It-Now option, I went ahead and spent the $20 +$5 shipping just to have them (and not loose the opportunity). I figured if they turn out to be different or not needed for whatever reason, then I'd just relist them on ebay....maybe with a bit more part number description...dimensions, tolerances, etc. It's just part of the process I guess. But I will ask the seller if there is a part number reference on these.

I wonder how much different the 53-55 bushings are from the 56+ bushings. It could be in either the I.D. or O.D. or maybe both. So I am also thinking that these bushings on ebay might just work with a different pin specification....

Do you or Roy have a picture of a 56-57 door hinge just for comparison?

I'm almost sure the ones you bought cant work, (thicker and to long) Chevy guys repro them because the door are heavy , BUT the repair kit can be used for 56 to 62 Corvette because again the Corvette hinges are the same as 55 to 57 Chevy. Again take your's to a machine shop as I mentioned!
