57 Harmonic Balancer Pulley - Joe Lucia

Can you please tell me if GM part# 3742991 for a harmonic balancer pulley will work on a 57 270hp.

I am unable to find the correct reconditioned balancer and pulley assembly that I need. I am thinking about using the #3584 (1957-61 All) Paragon balancer with the bolt on #991 pulley. Will this work? I am assuming the the only major difference with the balancer assembly's was the type of pulley that was attached to it?

Damper Doctor does not have one, and the place I sent mine out to for rebuilding, broke the outer ring. The good news in all of this is that I found out it wasn't the correct one for the car.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

    Thanks in advance.

    Michael,

I know you are waiting for Joe to verify a correct application from a
    numbers prespective.

From actual usage I can tell you that the Paragon part numbers you posted will work.

I had this exact setup on my '57 250 hp until the Damper Doctor could recondition my original riveted balancer assembly.

Original riveted assemblies show up on eBay every now and then.

    Good luck!

      Mike,

Just a quick followup to my previous post.

I realized after posting, that your 270 hp engine could have been equipped with a bolt-on balancer pulley. So you would not necessarily be looking for a riveted assemnbly.

I still believe that the Paragon parts will work fine.

There is no doubt in my mind that the GM #3896904 balancer (Paragon #3584) and GM #3742991 pulley will work with your application. What I don't know, for sure, is if this set-up will also require a change in the waterpump pulley. However, I think that you'll be able to use your existing waterpump pulley.

Roy, are you talking about just the pulley or the complete balancer and pulley assembly?

Joe, do you know if I am supposed to have a riveted or bolted on balancer? VIN #3029 Also, I notice in the catalogs that they say you need a 1/8" spacer between the crankshaft and balancer. Was this something that was originally on the engine, or do you have to put it in when installing a replacement balancer?

As Roy mentions, the original pulley was riveted to the balancer. That configuration is not important to FUNCTIONALITY, though; just originality.

All 1957-62 Corvettes used the balancer spacer.

Supposedly, it was used only for 1856 Corvettes with 2 X 4. I can't find any info that it was used for 1955, but it's possible it was.
