Good pad. Some naval jelly would clean that pad up beautifully and no metal damage. Plus it's a wipe on, wipe off, deal.

The stamped pad does look OK but from prior experience the judges do not like rust. With your documentation you should not have trouble with judging.

Naval Jelly; how long to leave on?

          Jerry,

How long does one leave on the Naval Jelly? And is there any risk whatsoever of the jelly doing any harm?

Gary, Before you have the car judged, send the same picture plus a copy of your POP to your team leader. Tell him of your fears and let him tell you what he thinks. My pad had problems so I did this before I judged my car and was pleasantly surprised.

              Bob; a follow-up question

              Bob,

What do you think about a little Navy Jelly to try and remove some of the rust? Too risky?

Certainly leaving it the way is it is safer for the pad, but perhaps with the risk of losing 38 points because of rust. I'd like a cleaner pad, but I don't want to try for perfection and wind up worse off then I am now.

Gun oil like Break Free will get rid of the rust over time and will do absolutely no damage to the pad.

                  Wayne: Which Break Free product

                  Wayne,

It looks like Break Free makes many products. Do you know the exact name of the one that will remove rust over time?

                    Gary,

Sorry for the delay. I just put it on with a little paint brush. Leave it on about ten minutes then wipe it off. I think it is water soluable. If that isn't enough just repeat. It is so easy you could do in five minute increments. I have never had any damage. Be sure to wear rubbers.

Auto Zone sells it in a small bottle on their paint stripper shelf. I really like it.

Re: Help with 66 pad judging

I agree, the engine stamping looks fine.

With the documentation you possess and the owner history indicating the engine has never been apart, this pad is further evidence of some of the problems of depending on clearly defined broachmarks as the hallmark of originality (IMHO).

                      Best wishes for the judging,

                      Mark
