    1968 POwer Brake Booster

I have a 1968 L36, M20, A/C and power brakes. I have two questions regarding the power brake booster:

    1. I am told that I need a power brake booster filter. I didn't see a reference to this in the judging manual and can't find this part on the internet, on e-Bay or at any supply house. I found one person at the Corvette Forum who indicated that this was NOT USED prior to 1976. As usual, I'm confused. Do I need the filter and, if so, any ideas where to source it.

    2. The hose to the power brake booster that is available currently is four inches too short. I understand that in 1969 there was a four inch metal tube to which the hose attached. That part was not present, I am told, in 1968. Does anyone have any information about this and know where to source the correct part with the correct markings ? I tried all the corvette suppliers (including Doc Rebuild) and none had the correct part with the correct markings.

    Thanks

If you have a 68 AIM, look in the options section in the back for UPC J50, Sheet A1...that sheet will show you the configuration of the power brake vacuum fitting in the intake manifold and the booster vacuum supply hose. I can't explain why you can't find the right length hose...there is no filter in the hose.

The intake manifold fitting on my 70 has one flared tubing connector end for an adapter "pipe" for the power booster; the rubber hose from the power booster connects to that tube. In 68, NO PIPE WAS USED; the hose connects directly to the vaccum fitting.

Filter? There is a filter/strainer screen inside the power brake booster and a check valve elbow fitting on the booster, but I'm pretty certain that's not what your friends were talking about. I suspect that they were referring to the filter on the vaccum supply tubing to the reservoir, but that is completely separate from the power brake booster.

      Chuck:

Thanks for the reply. I found a modern reproduction of the "filter" in the Zip corvette web site and learned that they call it a "booster vacuum hose fitting". Poking around, I learned that most places have a modern replacement that won't pass judging. I think I found the right one (called a "stock replacement) at another vendor. I appreciate your help.

Charles I believe that Corvette Stainless Steel Brakes (CSSB) in Miami is making/getting ready to make the correct piece.

          Dick:

Thanks for the heads up. Just went to their web site (easy to find with Google; don't know if I am allowed to give the address here). It says: "coming soon Spring of 2008 Judgeable exact replacements" under the catagory "power brake boosters 1968 - 1976". Looks like they will be getting my money soon !

They have been asking a lot of questions. Luke told me that it is their intention to make it 100% correct. Time will tell

              Dick:

Just FYI. I spoke with John today at Corvette Stainless and learned that they are having difficulty with the filter/check valve for the power steering booster. Apparently, there are many variations on the theme and they are not sure which is right for the various years. I was told that the power brake booster was used for a large number of GM cars (and trucks) in 1968, so it was suggested that I scour the junk yards for a 1968 product. I was also told that there are no accurate reproductions of this part currently.

              Thanks.
