    Identify this fan?

I have a 5 blade fan with the following stamped on the blades:

    SD D72
    912239

I came off my 1969 L-36 and I was wondering if there was any reason to keep it?

I can provide more pictures if needed

Thanks and a special congrats on your conversion. I can appreciate the work that went into this

There was once a GM part number of 912239 but it was assigned to the Opel Division and it wasn't a fan. So, this number on the fan must be some sort of manufacturer's identifying number. Consequently, this fan could be a lot of things---most probably an aftermarket piece.

        Joe,

I was researching the achieves and came across your question. Your "912239" fan dated "D72" (April 1972) is GM # 3863137 made by the Schwitzer Company ("SC") . It was one of the two fans used on 1966-67 Corvette 327 models w/AC but you probably already know this. Unfortunately it has a April 1972 date code. It must have been an "over the counter" fan.

David! Thanks: A post from the past! I could not find anything in the archives back when I searched. If you know of anyone who wants or can use this fan, it's theirs for the cost of shipping. Thanks again and deepest regards...joe

            Joe,

The problem is the date code (April 1972). I once had a NOS Schwitzer fan just like yours with an early 1970's date code. Several years ago I did manage to sell it but it went for about half the value of a used fan with a 66 or 67 date code. I have to assume that the 3863137 fan was sold over the counter but that number does not appear in any of my 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71, or 72 Chevrolet parts catalogs. It only appears in the assembly manuals. The other 5-blade 18" dia. fan that was used on 66-67 Corvettes (327) w/AC is GM #3789562 made by Hayes-Albion (stamped "H" with 4 "flat" head rivets/blade).

I can find no record that GM #3863137 was ever available in SERVICE. If it was, it was cataloged for a non-Chevrolet GM application and discontinued before July, 1973. That would be very unlikely since this is a Chevrolet part number.

                Joe,

As I said in my post I also have not found any Chevrolet parts catalog documentation about the 3863137 (Schwitzer # 912239) fan. It is only referenced in the 1966 & 1967 Chevrolet, Chevelle, Camaro, and Corvette assembly manuals. There is also a shop drawing of the fan in Noland Adams 63-67 restoration book on page 340 and an actual photo of one in the same book on page 338 from a 1966 Corvette (327) w/C60.

The 3789562 5-blade 18" fan (stamped "H" w/4 "flat" head rivets per blade) which is the other fan used in these same applications was discontinued in May 1972 and replaced with the 7-blade 18" fan, GM # 3931002. The 3931002 fan was a "one year wonder" that was only installed on 1968 Chevrolet models w/AC but NOT the 68 Corvette. The 3931002 also was a service fan for Corvettes and other Chevrolet models.

My guess is that the 3963137 fan (912239) MIGHT have been sold over the counter as a 3789562 fan since both fans served the same vehicles but were made by different companies. Other then that I have no explanation why the 3963137 (912239) fan appears with 1970's date codes.
