I'm looking at a NOS Fridgedaire G.M. A/C Compressor on that popular auction site. It's listed as model #6598513, code #011641 with additional stampings of D29Y and 6555302. Can anyone tell me if this might be the proper unit for 68 327? The seller indicates it has 67 vette written on the box. Any assistance will be appreciated.

Re: NOS Fridgedaire G.M. A/C Compressor
The parts book I have only shows the compressor broken down into maintnenance parts; if the "stamped" number 6555302 is a part number, that is the rear head PN. The assembly model number (6598513) does not show in my parts book, but that doesn't mean the compressor isn't a Corvette compressor assembly.
From what I can tell, the inner parts, and therefore the compressor's performance/application, are all the same from 62-72 (cylinder assembly, PN5914807), but depending on what parts you bought with the cylinder assembly, you would get a different clyinder assembly part number for 66 1st design (PN 5914809), and 66-71 2nd design (PN 5914810).
I suspect that it would work fine for you, but if you're having the car judged, you would have to replace the foil sticker with one having a date and color suitable for your model year. Joe Lucia may be able to add information or clarify the model number you gave.- Top

Re: NOS Fridgedaire G.M. A/C Compressor
Any suggestions for a vendor of a high quality 67' Corvette A/C compressor decal? I did buy one from a major Vette parts vendor and it seems too thin, too shiny, just doesn't look original.- Top

THIS "major Vette parts vendor"?
http://www.corvette-paragon.com/cata...D-CE4F820A42E6
Oops...On closer examination, Paragon doesn't have a label for the 67 compressor. The problem is there often isn't enough demand for many of these parts to justify multiple vendors tooling up to reproduce any given part. If you didn't like the reproduction label from one vendor, you probably won't like it from another, because it will in fact be the exact same label supplied by the first vendor. MFDobbins reproduces a lot of labels and stickers; he's probably a vendor I would consider.
The only suggestion I can make is to continue shopping for the label from different vendors; when you find the labels to be all the same, it's time to do the best you can with what you got/can get.Last edited by Chuck S.; March 6, 2008, 04:29 PM.- Top

Re: NOS Fridgedaire G.M. A/C Compressor
Anthony, Paragon shows only ONE AC Compressor label for 68...Small blocks and big blocks will have the same compressor and label. If the compressor you're looking at is TRULY for a 67 Corvette, it will probably work for you, but I would wait and see what Joe has to say.I'm looking at a NOS Fridgedaire G.M. For 69-71, the small block and big block labels are different. The differences in the later compressors is not obvious from the parts book I used in my first post.- Top

Re: NOS Fridgedaire G.M. A/C Compressor
Yes that's the vendor and the part number was 8202 for their 67' label. DO you happen to have a color photo of an actual origninal 67' A/C label?- Top

Re: NOS Fridgedaire G.M. A/C Compressor
OK...Now I see why I didn't see their 67 compressor label. It didn't show up from an online search of their catalog, so I looked in my hard catalog from 2007, and it's a 68-82 catalog.
I don't know anything about the 67 label, but this will give you and Anthony a ride back to the top.

Here you will see a color copy of my original 67 compressor label. You will see the model no. 5910645 and the code no. (assembly date) 090862 which is Sept. 8, 1966, 2nd shift. This compressor is on my Dec. 7th, 66 assembly date 67 convertible.Attached Files- Top

Re: NOS Fridgedaire G.M. A/C Compressor
Thank you, Warren. I didn't know how to de-code my compressor until I read your post. I looked at my compressor and found a build date of 2-10-67, which means it is the original compressor on my '67 with a build date of 3-08-07.- Top

Larry, isn't it nice to find that the dated part you have could be the original part that came on your car? I just love original dated parts.

Re: NOS Fridgedaire G.M. A/C Compressor
Anthony, since no better information has been forthcoming here, I would defer purchasing this compressor.
The risk you have is that this particular compressor, while identical to all previous versions internally, may have slightly different mounting points from your 68. What you would then have is a compressor that can't be used without exchanging some case components to obtain proper mounting points, or reselling the compressor to find another. From what I observe from an internet search this morning, new compressors for your exact application are available online, and for about the same money.
Sorry, I can't give you more specific information...the model number you gave does not fit with other compressor models used in Corvettes around that time period. Here is a site that looks interesting and has the compressor, but I haven't used them:

Re: NOS Fridgedaire G.M. A/C Compressor
Jeff:
I purchased a 1967 AC Compressor label from LICS about six months ago as a spare for my original compressor. My original label is starting to show its age, and I too looked around for the best reproduction. The LICS label was almost identical to my original, and I feel that it would judge well.
Probably the hardest thing is finding an old IBM electric typewriter to type in the date code, as the LICS label (and all other reproduction AC Compressor labels I know of) have a blank field for this information.
I believe the date code format was described by someone in a previous post (DDMMYshift). Mine is 012672, or January 26, 1967, second shift. This is for a late March built car.
