Most correct 66 BB exhaust system?

I have a 1966 427 coup with undercar exhaust. At this time who makes the most correct system? I called Corvette Central and asked about a carbon steel system. The person I spoke with said they sold very few of them and that because they are not GM I would take the same hit on judging so I should just buy the aluminized system. Is that true?

    Bob-----

Supposedly, Gardner Exhaust systems will be introducing (or, has already introduced) the "most correct exhaust system out there" for C2 and C3 Corvettes. I have not seen a system "in the flesh" as of yet so I can't comment on degree of correctness. Keep in mind that, among many other things, a correct exhaust system will have the rear pipe welded directly to the muffler with no slip (bell) joint. The latter configuration is SERVICE only.

You can check out the Gardner systems at www.gardnerexhaust.com

As far as what Corvette Central told you, I'd say it's essentially correct. The Corvette Central exhaust system, while excellent, is not going to fool any judges into thinking it's original. So, there might not be all that much additional deduction for aluminized versus carbon steel. However, keep in mind that a carbon steel system will soon rust and then you'll probably lose some condition points.

      Gardner pipes: welded to mufflers?

      Joe,

From what I can see in the photo on the Gardner website, the rear pipe are not welded to the mufflers. I hope that's not all they offer.

Gary, from what I have seen and heard, the rear pipes extend all the way to the inlet of the muffler. Would be no problem to weld them there.
