    1967 Power Steering Pump Reservoir

    Does this pump reservoir look correct for 1967? In particular, is the tube pointing in the right direction? The AIM shows it pointing in the other direction.

    Thanks, Ian

    I believe this configuration is essentially correct for a 1967-74 Corvette. There were actually 3 different reservoirs used over the 63-74 period---63-only, 64-66, and 67-74. All were very similar in general configuration with relatively minor differences. The angle of the return tube nipple is one of the differences. I think that the 67 AIM used a drawing which was originally made for earlier reservoirs.

    I believe the reservoir pictured is a GM #7826727 or a reproduction thereof which is a direct replacement for the 67-74 reservoir, GM #5696997. There are differences between the 2 reservoirs but they are minor and I've long-since forgotten what they are.

      Here, for comparison, are a couple of shots of a NOS GM pn 7826727 which is listed as '67-74 in the May 1983 parts book. I bought it from Chevy 20 some years ago and then didn't use it. My older parts book also shows 5696997 but I'm not sure exactly what is different between the two.

      Holy cow. I just saw above that I just had my 30 year anniversary with the NCRS. Where's the cake?

        Look the same to me, I'd say it's a 67-74 model.

          Thanks for your replies.

          It verifies that the one on my car is not correct as the tube is longer and instead of terminating as shown in Tom's photos, it makes a u-turn up about 3" for the connection point at the side of the reservoir.

            It might not even be a Corvette reservoir. All 3 of the reservoirs used for Corvettes over the 1963-74 period + the SERVICE-only 67-74 reservoir GM #7826727 were Corvette-only pieces. However, the reservoirs used for most other 63-74 Chevrolet applications were similar in general configuration. The differences involved chassis-specific items (like return nipple configuration). Rebuilders are very likely to "disregard" these "nuances" and consider all of the 63-74 reservoirs as "generic". In fact, you will often find that rebuilders will show just one part number for all 63-74 Chevrolet applications, Corvette or otherwise. So, which reservoir you get is more-or-less a "crapshoot". The actual pumps, themselves, are pretty much the same for 63-74 Chevrolet (except 63-66 shaft). The reservoirs were the primary difference in original pump assemblies. Plus, Corvette and some MD/HD trucks used an internal fluid filter.

              Joe;

              I guess if I buy a rebuilt pump with reservoir from one of the major Corvette parts suppliers instead of from a general auto parts house, I will get a correct pump reservoir.

              Do you think my guess is correct?

              Thanks, Ian

                I very much doubt it.

                  Hi All,
                  There was a good article by Bill Bradley in the Fall of 2005 NCRS Restorer on 1963-82 Corvette power steering pumps. (Vol 32 #2)
                  Regards,
