    C3/1976 Oil Filter Question

The judging guide says the pf-25 filter is all blue with the 3"x2" adhesive, and embossing on the bottom saying "BEST WAY TO PROTECT YOUR ENGINE-REPLACE WITH AC TYPE PF25." Is this accurate, and where in the #@ll can you ind one!

    Thanks!

These filters are not reproduced as far as I know. However, they are for sale on eBay quite frequently. They often don't command very high prices. You want to make sure you get the one with the BLUE BACKGROUND paper label. These were manufactured for a lot of years from about 1974 through the mid 80's, so they are not too rare.

      Chris,
You won't see a blue PF-25 with the embossing on the bottom. That was only seen on the first issue white PF-25's from the 1969 era.

Yes, somehow I missed that part of Chris' original post. If the JG says that the blue AC PF-25's had the embossment on the bottom, it's WAY off base. The embossment ended about 1972, even before the white filters ceased to be produced.

            Re: C3/1976 Oil Filter Question

The first blue PF-25's appeared very late in the 1974 model. It had a foil label where the red background behind the AC logo was reflective as well as the blue background behind the GM logo. This design continued until very early in the 1976 model. At that point, the foil label was replaced by a slightly larger all paper label and the reflective fields were replaced by flat color. Although the foil label design was in production for over a year, they are very rare. No records were kept on these cosmetic changes and no part number changes were made. It is likely that the assembly plant made no effort to make a clean break based on these changes and would probably use either design until the older design filters were used up.

Based on this information, I believe that any 1974 built before February, 1974 would have white and after that date would be white or blue with a foil label. I would expect all 1975 models to be blue with a foil label. Early 1976's could be foil or paper labels and then all paper labels of the same design through the 1981 model.

As stated earlier, no white filters were embossed beyond mid-1972 and blue filters were never embossed.

In my opinion, these subtle differences are only important from a historical perspective but are only worth a couple of points from a judging perspective and don't justify the big prices that are now being paid.
