I still don't understand why NCRS says that 270 and 290 H.P. cars use the off road exhaust. There was never an option for these systems until 1962. If you look in the 1958-1960 sections of Noland Adams book you see two factory photos of two different cars both with crossover exhaust and oval mufflers, not round. Its my understanding that all the 57's had round mufflers no matter the horsepower and they were standard...not a special option. Then for 58-61 the factory simply changed the shape...thats all.

Re: Muffler shape opinions..misunderstood??
Justin,
My 290hp 59 has always had the round mufflers from the time I acquired it in 1961. It also has the RPO 686 option.
In a magazine I have access to (CORVETTE Equipment Guide), that states:"
This Guide refers primarily to 1959's, 1956, 1957 and 1958 models have many similar components."
In it I have found a passage that states:
"When ever possible, most experts install low-resistance mufflers of the straight-through type (standard with 1959 270- and 290-h.p. Corvette V8's) or completely replace the muffler with straight pipes."
I hope this is some information that will answer some of your questions.
