    C2 Trim Tag Build Dates

    Hello,

I own a St Louis built 67 convertible that I have had since 2002. The car is Marlboro and has a black vinyl interior. The car also has a P-O-P which matches the trim tag.

Here is the issue: the trim tag is authentic, per the Trim Tag book (I did not own this book when I bought the car, and I did not really car at that time). The POP is also authentic per the ususal people who authenticate these. The issue is that the trim tag body date precedes the estimated birthday by about 18 days.

I am confused how this could have happened. I did not think a body could sit at St Louis for this type of period. Does it seem likely someone switched the tag? I do not know if anyone knew how to detect bogus tags back then so I would have expected them to get a repro instead of a genuine tag.
    Thanks,
    Rob.

Here is a photo of my TRIM TAG: APRIL 10 body build date. Body #S4812
I believe that coupes and converts had a separate numerical listing as well as S & A so in reality there could be 4 alpha listings with the same numerical sequence.
          67 437 "A" 1234
          67 437 "S" 1234
          67 467 "A" 1234
          67 467 "S" 1234

You didn't comment on your VIN so you'll have to decide that one. Your VIN should be close to mine.....

MY tags are original. I've owned the car since 1982.

            Steve,

That is the problem, my VIN is almost 1500 cars later, and I am wondering how or if my body could have been tagged and then sat around for 2 weeks or so due to rework or repairs to the body prior to getting a VIN assigned.

            Strange issue isn't it?

Unique problem. Possibly some of the old line workers on this site might comment.

I do believe the body was close to completion with trim pieces Seats, Dash etc, installed before the tag was attached. This is based on the typical "trimtag date to VIN #" to be within a day or two. If a major rework was required on the body you'd think it was caught before the tag was issued. On the other hand, maybe signifcant damage happened to the body during final assy or some final trim pieces were unavailable at the last minute causing the delay.........

I have a 67 Roadster that is an April car with birthday book saying it rolled off the line on April 24th. My original trim tag is dated the same day. I will try and post a photo. Body number is 67 467 S7515 dated I24. Hope this helps.

Another thought. If the date were I20 would that be more in line with the VIN#? Reasoning: your trimtag may have been the first one made on I20 after I19 and the numeric character was not changed from 1 to 2.....and no one noticed or really cared back then......
The trim tag does NOT carry the importance of the VIN tag which is a "legal" number.....

Re: C2 Trim Tag Build Dates

The trim tag (and the VIN plate) were affixed immediately after the body left the Paint Shop, at the first operation on the Hard Trim Line; at the same time, that unit was "broadcast" to all the subassembly lines in the plant, and was locked in physical sequence on the line.

It caused all manner of chaos to pull a unit after that point, as lots of subassemblies for that car were already being built, and would also have to be physically "pulled" from their lines. It's conceivable that it was pulled due to a significant material shortage, but that would have been known before the unit was put on the Trim Line and tagged, and it would normally just sit at the exit of the Paint Shop awaiting scheduling to the line until the required shortage material arrived.

Could also be a typo on the trim tag.

John brings up an interesting point, a typo trim tag. I have one which has the incorrect paint code, off by one digit.

                          Hi Rob,
The closest trim tag I have been able to find so far is as follows:
194677s116035 had a I12 and a body #S7278 when it was sold on Ebay in 2005. This seems to be inline with your trim tag. All mine trim tags I filed by Vin#'s so can't help but so much.
                          Regards,
                          Page Campbell
