    Paint

I am painting my 62 Corvette Fawn Beige Metallic. For many reasons I've decided to go base coat and clear.
Can anyone suggest or recommend a paint source that will match or come close to the Fawn Beige Metallic lacquer that DuPont produced in 62. I've been told that the product PPG produces is too heavy on the metallic.
Hope to hear from somebody. Thanks!

            Hunnnh??!!...Ah, Nevermind...Wine Talking Here.

Rick, as discussed in a recent thread, current PPG matches have fine metallic flake compared to the current OEM paint used on Chevrolets. I believe the current OEM paint is DuPont. I mention this only to suggest an alternative matching approach. PPG's current metallic may be very slightly more coarse than the metallic used in the fifties and sixties, but only because the metallic in that period was EXTREMELY fine as seen in original paint photos provided in that thread.

As suggested in that thread, I would recommend having your PPG dealer do a spectroscopic match of a good original paint sample, have him mix a pint, spray a couple of test panels, compare to the sample, and see what you think. If you have no original paint, and must work from codes, then the metallic could become a problem for you...test panels examined by a judge or compared to a known original sample is the only way you'll get a good match. Sikkens is another brand that I understand is known for very fine metallic flake.

In my opinion if you can see any flake easily in the color then it's not correct

It Hurts To See You Guys So Agreeable...

                            And still hurting.

Actually, I also agree with you, Roy, but if they ain't sellin' it, you can't buy it; correct or not. If PPG's current metallic for OEM BC/CC is too coarse, and I'm thinking it IS slightly more coarse than the old lacquer, the only other thing to do is to discuss the metallic flake size with the paint technician. If he's agreeable, he may be willing to try substituting a mix component with a finer metallic, but he may have to special order it ($$$).

Another option is to bypass the local paint technician altogether, and go directly to PPG's Technical Services in Strongsville, OH and explain what you're trying to do. You'll get a real answer without any smoke blowing...they'll tell you if it can be done with PPG products.

Ah, so many questions to answer and problems to solve trying to match old metallic paint. It's too bad I have a white car...I'm missing out on all the fun.
