    Re: C1 Pilot Bushing Problem

hi, i had exactly the same problem and just machined a new bearing last week. i think the factory just made mistakes back then. it worked great. the key is you have to find the correct material which i think is oil impregnated scintered iron . most bearing houses only had bronze which i think will wear out. i found the right stuff at j.c.tarbell in longmeadow ,ma. 800-513-3163. i machined o.d. to 1.132" and i.d. to .593". made a tool the size of the trans snout to hammer it in. wanted to make sure i didn't distort the I.D. when inserting.

Joe, How do you tell if the crank was originally setup for a Turboglide? I measured to leading edge where it tapers to the smaller diameter. That measurement is about 1/4" deeper than a big block I have with a pilot bearing in. I got the Motormite 14659 which is for the same purpose and the larger diameter is about 3/16" thick. This would indicate that the pilot would be 1/16 or so further out than the big block I have. Any idea on how much leaway there is on the pilot portion of the input shaft on the transmission? Also do you know the difference in the Dorman 14659 verses 690035. Is one bronze verses some other material? I know the Motormite I have is magnetic. Thanks Ted

                Hi Ted
if you can look at the archives, you'll see a rather large discussion on this very topic. Say maybe 3 or 4 weeks ago. you have many options to rectify this problem

The Turboglide crank has the much larger pilot bushing bore. You don't have that crank. Off-hand, I don't know the leeway on the input shaft pilot or the difference between the two Motormite bushings.

The smaller bushing is called a "Powerglide Adapter" by Dorman. It's O.D. is about 1.070. The "Turboglide Adapter" is huge, but could be turned to the size you need. Such Powerglide Cranks were from 1961 and before, as I recall.

Going the other direction, I like the sound of the Jeep (and Studebaker?) Idea...

                          Re: C1 Pilot Bushing Problem

i ran into a pilot bushing problem after rebuilding my C2 327. Due lack of lubrication the pilot bearing would gall when the clutch was engaged. Didn't find the noise until the third time the transmission was pulled.

Bought a new "standard" O.D. bearing and is was several thousandths too small.

Then order three standard bushings - guess what - they had a different O.D. measurement !

Found one the correct size and installed it. So much for Chinese Q.C.

Order a couple of different bushing and see what you find.

                          Good luck

I mean 1.060, not 1.070. "Powerglide Adapter" by Dorman
