66- Emergency brake bracket removal ??

Now that my cluster is out, etc I want to take my e-brake L - black bracket off to repaint it. It's the black bracket that houses the e-brake handle/rod to the firewall.

I disconnected the brn wire to the switch, started to turn the e-brake handle counterclock wise as it is threaded into the firewall housing but stopped when I realized I probably need to loosen the cables?????

What is the correct procedure please to remove please.

    Keith,

2 bolts hold bracket to dash brace.
On engine side of firewall, remove 2 nuts at cable wheel. This will separate bracket from firewall.......the 2 studs will be withdrawn, with bracket, from passenger side firewall.
In order to remove handle from bracket, the "stop" must be removed. It is a press fit. Once removed, the hole and stop shaft can be threaded. OR, pin can be deformed (slightly) and pressed back on, along with some thread locker.
