'78 Pace Car: paint quality & sticker shock

New car in dealer showroom (Bay Chevrolet) in Kane'ohe Hawaii, in the spring of '78.

Check the orange peel and dirt in the black. I remember that local buyers (here in western Canada) were screaming for repaint on the pace cars and silver annie's back then, especially after hefty deposits. Would this be considered "typical" of factory quality ?

Same car ...8S900618, sticker bottom price $ 14,846. PLUS price adjustment of $ 10,154 to make a nice even 25 grand.

I counted 12 runs in the lower color of a new SA car. Same car had 16 grit grinding disk marks on the bad door fit painted over. So, Yes, I would say thats typical.

        Wayne:

Nice photo! Captures the sins along with the edge of the decal I thought at first was a scratch. On the judging field we've looked at many low-mileage original 78's both Pace and SAs. What you show and describe is typical.

Was the $25k today's price or what was being asked for in 1978?

that looks like the original paint. it was not that nice. all it needs is a little wet sand and buff and the paint looks fine. i have a friend that has one with 500 miles. it looks like that one

Dealer was asking $ 25 K in early May 1978

Tom -- I was on vacation in Hawaii at that time. Took several pics of the car and window sticker and dealer (add-on) sticker.

If the buyer paid that much as an investment, I don't think he made a wise choice. Thinking back ... could probably have bought a decent C2 BB for around $5 to 6K at the time.

You could have bought a '68 or '69 L/88 for $4-5k at that time

At least this one didn't show up at the dealer with primer showing through, cracks on every corner on each seam and the front wheel openings cut with a very dull keyhole saw lke mine did.

I had SN 60. I bought it at the Auburn ACD auction. I had only 4 miles on it. Cat was 1 of a GM dealers collection that went belly up. It was from the ST. LOUIS area. The paint SUCKED. Silver over spray on the black part of the hood. Paint Ice sickles hanging from the bottom of the front fenders & doors. Glass t-top was cracked & had factory replacements still in the box with the car. I have a 70 LT-1 with 19000 mi & original paint & its very nice. Did GM just not give a crap about quality after the early 70'S. If the pace cars looked like that with all the hype I would hate to see what the standard Corvettes looked like. I know now why they quit painting Corvettes Black after 69. They should have not changed there mind. Paint them all white.
